Director, UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences
Robert A. Fishman Distinguished Professor of Neurology
Dr. Hauser, a neuroimmunologist, has advanced the understanding of the genetic basis, immune mechanisms, and treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). His four decades of work led to the development of B-cell therapies for treating all forms of the disease and the first proven therapy for progressive MS. He led UCSF’s Department of Neurology for 25 years before being named the inaugural director of the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences. Dr. Hauser previously served as president of the American Neurological Association, chair of the research advisory committee for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, editor-in-chief of Annals of Neurology, and editor of the medical textbook Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine. He earned his medical degree at Harvard Medical School and trained in internal medicine at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, in neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and in immunology at Harvard Medical School and the Pasteur Institute.
