Arthur and Toni Rembe Rock Distinguished Professor
Sam Hawgood, MBBS, is UCSF’s 10th chancellor. He was appointed by the UC Board of Regents in 2014, but his UCSF career dates to 1982, when he arrived as a research fellow in neonatology. A renowned researcher, professor, academic leader, and pediatrician, Chancellor Hawgood leads an $11.4 billion enterprise with more than 40,000 employees and a public mission of advancing health worldwide through scientific discovery, health sciences education, and patient care. One of his top priorities is harnessing the power of data and advanced computing tools, including artificial intelligence, to bridge genetics, molecular research, bioinformatics, and medicine, eventually yielding better outcomes and greater health equity for all. A native of Australia, Chancellor Hawgood entered medical school at age 17 and graduated with first-class honors from the University of Queensland in Brisbane with a degree in medicine and surgery. Before being named chancellor, his roles at UCSF included chair of the Department of Pediatrics, physician-in-chief of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals, and dean of the School of Medicine.
