Dr. Smith is a palliative care and geriatrics physician-researcher. He co-hosts
GeriPal, a geriatrics and palliative care podcast for all health care professionals, with Eric Widera, MD ’02, also a professor in the Division of Geriatrics. Dr. Smith’s research focuses on improving quality of life and patient-physician communication for older adults, particularly those with a limited prognosis. He co-founded
ePrognosis, an online tool kit for estimating prognosis for older adults, and serves as executive editor of the
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. Dr. Smith earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Michigan, master’s and medical degrees from UCSF, and a Master of Public Health degree from Harvard University.
